The Crow's Nest - March 31, 2017
It is fun to watch. That “it” is the snow outside in the yards and in the ditches along the roadways. These last few days the snow has been slowly disappearing. There are flood watches out for the northern valley, but from my vantage point in Edinburg it is hard to visualize. I know everyone that I talk to is anxious for warmer weather and spring to arrive.
It has been almost 2 months since I had knee replacement surgery. One minute it seems like it has gone by so fast and the next minute it seems like it has been forever. I am now in the 2nd phase of knee surgery. Rose Denault mentioned this shortly before I had surgery. She said the first few weeks there is pain (very tolerable), then comes the “can’t sleep” phase. This is not so tolerable! The last time I saw Dr. Schall, the Orthopedic Surgeon, he mentioned this very same scenario to me. I find I am awake every 2 hours, finally giving in and turning the television on. Dr. Schall said this would last for about 6 weeks. I understand my body is trying very hard to identify this foreign object that is now my knee joint and knee cap. I also know my new knee is battling with my rheumatoid arthritis. They are not fans of each other. The RA causes setbacks that don’t make me very happy. But, having complained about all this, I know when the time comes I will willingly have my other knee done also.
Being laid up has given me lots of opportunities to have a front row seat to all the college athletics that have been on TV these last few weeks. O my, it is very easy to get caught up in the brackets, hoopla and mania that goes along with the games. My “Fighting Hawks” (Sioux) hockey team lost along with the Kansas University Jayhawks so I guess I can now start other things I need to get done on my “to-do” list.
The Edinburg grocery store, Market On Main, is doing very well. Manager, Cindy Vargeson, has done a terrific job in stocking the store with everything anyone could want or need. Ross Langerud keeps the meat case full of great cuts of meat. I was visiting with an individual the other day who said she thought she would just try hamburger that was less expensive from a big box store. She said that was a huge mistake! I agree. The hamburger down at Market On Main is the very best there is. Do you know they even offer home delivery in town? What a god-send for those who find it difficult to get out to shop. I know I mention it many times in other places in this website but, Edinburg is a great place to live, and the grocery store is one of the reasons why. The transition from the Hall’s owning the store to the city owning it has gone so smoothly. I for one appreciate so much that the store continues to carry all the unique groceries it did before becoming city owned.
I was visiting with Bill Nowatzki the other night and he mentioned he had planted many of the hundreds of vegetable seedlings he puts in pots every spring. I couldn’t tell you how many flower seeds he has growing also. I am of the firm belief that between Bill and Elmer Pederson, they could feed all of Walsh County and beyond with all the vegetables they grow in their gardens.
Randy and Jan Johansen are in Bemidji this week anxiously awaiting the birth of a new grandchild to their daughter Marlie and husband Asher. This new baby will be welcomed by big sister Harper. Life gets mighty exciting when there are new grandchildren to love.
A great big congratulations to Mariah Lardy and Jackson Hall on their recent engagement. I saw there were something like 1100+ likes of congratulations on Mariah’s Facebook page. Everyone is so happy for the two of them. I’m sure many mirror my feelings when I say they are such a sweet and very nice couple. I wish the best to them.
Hopefully the next Crow’s Nest will have some good stories. As the weather warms, people will be out and about more and that is when the crazy stories happen. Keep tuned in. Have a great day and we will talk later. O, by the way, Harold and Alida Flom, Marshall and Mary Burkett, the robins, mourning doves, grackles and catbirds are home from being down south. This has to be a sure sign that Spring is here!
